heycapy only sends your sign-in codes itself. reminder emails go out through your own email account, so you set that up once in tweaks → notifications → email. with gmail it takes about two minutes.
with gmail
1. make an app password
an app password is a separate password just for heycapy. your real google password never goes anywhere, and you can delete it any time.
- app passwords need 2-step verification. if it isn’t on yet, turn it on in your google account under security.
- open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and sign in.
- give it a name, like
heycapy, and create it. - google shows a 16 character password once. copy it.
2. put it in heycapy
in tweaks → notifications → email, fill in:
- host:
smtp.gmail.com - port:
587 - send from: your full gmail address
- app password: the 16 characters. leave out the spaces google shows between them
press [save], then [send test email]. if the test arrives, you’re done.
3. tick email in your buckets
buckets that already had email ticked start sending straight away. for the others, open bucket settings → notifications and tick email under channels.
reminders go to the address you log in with. to get them somewhere else, put that address in deliver to.
other email providers
any provider that offers smtp works. search its help for “smtp settings” and you’ll find the host and port. most want port 587 and a password made for apps rather than your normal one.
heycapy can only reach public mail servers, so a server on your own computer or home network won’t work here.
if the test fails
- check that send from is your full address and the app password has no spaces.
- use port
587. - work or school google accounts can’t make app passwords, and neither can accounts with advanced protection or 2-step verification that only uses security keys. use another account or provider.
- if you deleted the app password or google removed it, make a new one and save it again.
