capy is the ai in heycapy. you can chat with it in the app (the capy in the corner), talk to it with the mic, or message it in telegram. it can add and change items, move dates, tell you what’s due, and change a bucket’s settings when you describe what you want.

you don’t have to spell things out. “remind me to call grandma sunday evening, and push the plumber thing to 4pm and let kavita handle it” does all of it: it picks a time for “evening”, finds the plumber item, moves it and gives it to kavita. name a few things at once (“netflix, hotstar and prime”) and each becomes its own item. it fills a bucket’s own fields, like an amount, and asks before it deletes anything.

capy knows which of a bucket’s settings come from your bucket defaults and can put one back on them (“make my bills bucket use my defaults again”). it can’t change the defaults themselves, for that it points you to tweaks → notifications → bucket defaults.

capy works in shared buckets too, and can give items to people: “remind sam to call the plumber tomorrow at 9” puts it on sam’s 9am. in a bucket someone else owns, it can only change your own channels.

capy credits

on app.heycapy.xyz, new accounts get some free capy credits, so you can see if you enjoy using capy. each message to capy uses up credits. when they run out, capy tells you, and you can keep going with your own ai key. you can buy more in tweaks → credits.

use your own key

with your own key, capy works exactly the same. you pay the ai company directly for what you use, and no credits are used.

  1. get an api key from one of these: openai, anthropic, groq or gemini.
  2. in heycapy, open tweaks → ai and set who answers to your own key.
  3. pick the provider, paste the key, and save.
  4. type the model you want, exactly as your provider names it. leave it empty and capy uses that provider’s usual one, shown in grey in the box.

the box at the top tells you which ai is answering right now. press [check] there if you want to make sure your key works. your key stays saved even if you switch back to heycapy ai.

each provider keeps its own key and model. switch to another provider and its fields are empty, switch back and it shows your key is still saved, so you can try a few without pasting keys again. to remove one, pick the provider, press [clear … key and model], then save.

keeping your key safe

  • your key is encrypted before it’s stored, with a secret that lives only on the server, never in the database.
  • it’s only used on the server, to talk to your provider. it never ends up in reminders, chats or your data export.
  • once saved, it never comes back to your browser. tweaks only shows that a key is saved and its last 4 characters, like saved · ••••x7f2. to change it, press [edit] and paste the new one.
  • clearing it removes it from heycapy for good, and deleting your account removes everything.
  • tip: make a separate key just for heycapy, with a spending limit at your provider. then you can switch it off any time without touching anything else.

voice

the mic turns what you say into text, then capy takes it from there. a recording can be up to 2 minutes.

with your own key, voice has its own settings under tweaks → ai → voice: pick groq, openai or gemini, or turn it off. if it’s the same provider as your chat, you can leave the key blank and it reuses that one.

ollama

ollama runs ai models on a computer or server of your own. pick ollama as the provider and put in its url, like http://your-server:11434.

on app.heycapy.xyz, that url has to be reachable from the internet. addresses on a private network, like localhost or 192.168.x.x, are refused, because it’s heycapy’s server that connects to them. when you host heycapy yourself, any address works.

one thing to know: ollama has no password, so anyone who finds that address can use your server. only open it up to the internet if you’re fine with that.

ai reminder texts

capy can also write your reminder texts. that’s in tweaks → ai → ai notification messages, more on it in notifications.
